Elijah was one week old yesterday! I can't believe he has been here for a whole week already. Time sure flies! I promised to update everyone on how the past week has gone, and now that Elijah is sound asleep on Joel, I finally have a little bit of time to write!

I went into labor at 7:00 am last wednesday. Joel left for work at 6:30, because I felt fine and definitely didn't think I was going to go into labor! By 9:00 my contractions were already 3-5 minutes apart, so my doctor had me come get checked out. She wanted me to go home for an hour or two and then come back and get checked in at triage. By the time I got home at 11, my contractions were a minute and a half apart, and since Elijah was face up, I had really bad back labor. We were checked in and in the hospital room by 1:30, and I had an epidural shortly after that. Epidurals are wonderful. I wasn't sure if I wanted one, but am SO thankful that I did! I felt like up until that point I was just so ready to not be pregnant and in labor anymore. But after I had the epidural I found so much joy and anticipation for the birth of our son, instead of just wanting the pain to be gone. At dinner time I was 8cm. They let me start pushing a little after 7, and he was born at 7:24! I had such a positive childbirth experience...I felt so blessed.

This week has been really good. The first few nights he didn't want to sleep in the bassinet, so we slept on the couch together, but now he sleeps in it all night. He likes to be wide awake until midnight, but after that he sleeps until 3:30 or 4, and then wakes up around 7:30. Sometimes he will even go back to sleep with me until 9:30! This has pretty much been the pattern since day one. Last night he gave me a break and fell asleep before 11! But then I had an extra feeding at 1:30. I'm just thankful to be in my own bed and getting great sleep! It's been 9 months since I have felt that feeling!

Well, if I don't post this now I don't know when I will, but I need to run. It's lunchtime and Elijah doesn't want to wait :o)
